For Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche
Lately I’m pretty sure that whatever it is
we think of enlightenment, it may be that
it is really a long eliding of a long sliding into
a terrible letting go. But more likely
a releasing of your grip from the edge of that building
but I’m not a superhero. There’s not a length of web
or a hook and a rope. Nothing to hang on to, no parachute,
that will jerk me back, at that last moment.
The moment you know is coming in the movies because
it would be too horrifying for our hero
to end just like that, slipped from his grip and fallen
even though that building was only a movie set
even though the good news is, there’s no ground and
even though it’d be infinitely more heroic,
everyone would want their money back.
